The more often youth are exposed to flavored tobacco products and advertising, the more likely they are to start using tobacco.

ParentIN Event: Cannabis, What Parents Need to Know
Feb 18 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cannabis-what-parents-need-to-know-tickets-140885254589

Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug among youth today and is more potent than ever. The chances of our kids encountering cannabis in their tweens and teens have only increased with the passing of Act 164, the new law that allows retailers to sell cannabis starting in October 2022.

Teens and young adults are especially susceptible to the negative effects of any drug use, including cannabis. Evidence has shown that cannabis use can lead to cognitive and psychiatric problems, impede academic success, and diminish well-being.

This ParentIN sponsored presentation with child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. David Rettew, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, will inform parents about the research, trends, and myths related to cannabis use so they can feel prepared and comfortable to talk about this issue with their kids. Dr. Rettew will also introduce his new book, Parenting Made Complicated, which was released this month.

Kicking off Prevention Day 2021, Prevention Works!VT invites you to participate in an advocacy training designed for prevention stakeholders:
Advocacy in a Virtual World
Wednesday, March 10th from 12 noon to 1:30pm

With remote meetings dominating the way business is done by legislators, learn how legislators are working online and how to be effective in this new “virtual Statehouse.” We’ll discuss the importance of building relationships with legislators, how to make the most of an opportunity to testify, and how to follow up with legislators and keep the conversation going after you have had a meeting or testified at a hearing. We’ll take a little tour of the legislative website so you can find what you need to engage in the process, and we’ll also talk about how to know when you are “lobbying.” Join us for this training so you will have the tools you need to be effective in this new environment. The training will be offered by Amy Shollenberger of Action Circles.

Who should participate? Prevention Coalition staff, members, leadership (steering committees and boards), youth, and all stakeholders.

Take Down Tobacco Day
Apr 1 all-day

There will be activities happening at your local school this week. Reach out to Reagan at reagan@burlingtonpartnership.org to learn more!

WHAT IS TAKE DOWN TOBACCO DAY?
Take Down Tobacco is a fresh take on Kick Butts Day — the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids annual day of action. The Take Down Tobacco program is a 365-day effort that culminates every spring with the Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action. 2021 marks the 26th anniversary of this program, and there have been many important victories since the first Kick Butts Day was held in 1996.

Over the past quarter century, the U.S. has made remarkable progress in doing just what the Kick Butts Day name describes: kicking butts. But even though youth smoking rates are on a downward trend and at an all-time low, skyrocketing youth e-cigarettes rates are reversing the progress we’ve made toward achieving the first tobacco-free generation. And of course, from cigarettes and cigars to smokeless tobacco to heat-not-burn cigarettes, the tobacco industry peddles a wide range of addictive and dangerous products that put kids at risk across the globe.

Take Down Tobacco is a reflection of both how far we've come and how far we still need to go to achieve the first tobacco-free generation.

National Public Health Week 2021

Building Bridges to Better Health
We may be physically distant from each other, but now it’s more important than ever to come together. That’s why our 2021 theme is “Building Bridges to Better Health.”

Making communities safe and healthy is public health’s top priority. COVID-19 has made that even more important. Even though we won’t gather in person, social media and virtual platforms make it easier than ever for us to connect, create and take action.

NPHW 2021 takes place completely virtually April 5-11, 2021. Check out the events page for a full list of events each day.

National Prevention Week @ everywhere! Learn more here: https://www.samhsa.gov/prevention-week
May 9 – May 15 all-day

National Prevention Week (NPW) is a public education platform that promotes prevention year-round through providing ideas, capacity building, tools, and resources to help individuals and communities make substance use prevention happen every day.

NPW culminates in May recognizing the important work that has been done in communities throughout the year to inspire action and prevent substance use and mental disorders.

SAMHSA’s NPW is May 9 through 15, 2021. Each year around this observance, communities and organizations across the country come together to raise awareness about the importance of substance use prevention and positive mental health.

This year for SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week (NPW) they are inviting youth leaders to participate in the 2021 NPW #YouthLeadingPrevention video challenge.
